About the Artist
Clara Samani is currently a senior at the CSULB School of Art’s Printmaking program. Clare is from the San Fernando Valley, but came to Long Beach for school. She aims to attend grad school in Louisiana. Clare has been drawing all her life, especially since her dad motivated her to draw. Clare has always loved art, but she found her passion for print making in a class at community college. Now, Clare has been printmaking for 5 years.
Clare’s work showcases various tops that have their own style. The fabric, print, and colors are all to unique to each painting. Some paintings have a second one complimenting it. For example, the two paintings with the red polka dots show the same shape of top. However, one painting has a white top with a blue background whereas the second painting is it contrast. The top is blue while the polka dots and background have become slightly white. The tops are not precisely drawn or laid out.
Clare focuses on identity, pattern and design. She is inspired by American fashion and all the variety of styles it encompasses. After working with cloth and the imitation of the human body, Clare worked on human clothing. Clare’s paintings were based on either a person clothing. For the colors she uses and paints, they are based on whether or not she knows the person. If she does not, then she gets the color scheme from the object. Clare works with symbolism and identity of the people and clothing.
I really liked Clare’s exhibit. The different tops and colors stood out to. I think this is the first time I have seen an artist put two opposite kind of paintings next to each other. It really brings out the differences between the two, but calls attention to its own uniqueness. Fashion will always be talked about, created, recreated, and everything else. American fashion brings back styles from years ago or creates its own trend every now and then. Clare based her paintings off an individual she knew or a special clothe, which is quite sentimental.
